Have an Attitude of Gratitude (Getting and Keeping a Godly Mindset: Day 4 of 4)

We have been learning how to get a keep a Godly mindset in 2017.  We have learned about being positive, choosing peace, and daring to hope.  Today, I want us to ask ourselves, “Am I grateful for the things I have?”  Do my thoughts and actions show an attitude and heart of thanks or am I filled with complaints and hurts?

Colossians 2:6-7  Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

Have an Attitude of Gratitude

We choose our attitudes.  Every day, we choose how we act, what we think upon, what we say, and, ultimately, how we feel.  Now, a great number of us allow our circumstances and others to dictate our attitude, but the truth is, we choose.

We can think of everything wrong or we can find something right.  It is easy to find the things wrong.  I could give you a top ten list right now.  Why?  Because we have developed unhealthy habits of making big deals out of little inconveniences and disappointments, while ignoring the positives.  We take many of our blessings for granted.

So, how do we form attitudes of gratitude?

Pray to God and Praise His Holy Name.

In Joyce Meyer’s Book, I Dare You, she suggests:

Start the day with a prayer of thanks and praise.  Choose, from the moment you wake up, to give thanks and glory to God.

Did you get out of bed this morning?  Praise the Lord!  There are many who did not wake up this morning and there are many who cannot get out of their beds.

Did you get enough to eat today?  Well, Praise the Lord!  The numbers in line at local food pantries can attest to the fact that there are millions of people who don’t have enough to eat.  In fact, there are millions all over the world who did not eat at all today.

Did you stand at your closet and ponder over what to wear today?  Well, Praise the Lord for he has blessed you with clothes in abundance!

Did you have someone to say hello this morning….Praise the Lord……did your car start……PTL….

On and on it  could go.

End the day with a prayer of thanks and praise.  At the end of each day, think about your day.  Where did you find your blessings?  Write them down.

A popular trend around the new year is to write down good things that happen to you on a slip of paper and put each slip in the jar.  At the end of the year (New Year’s Eve) you are to take them out and read them.  I think this is a great idea for our praises to God.  Write your blessings out, and when you are struggling to find blessings, go back and read previous entries.  It will remind you of God’s goodness and give you faith, hope, and encouragement.

Memorize scripture

Once again, let us be reminded of having the Word of God written in and on our hearts. When we are struggling and hurting, His Word can draw us out and back to Him.  What are some great scriptures on gratitude, thanksgiving, and praise?

1 Chronicles 16:34 O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Psalm 100:4  Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name.

Ephesians 5:3-4  But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

Colossians 3:15  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

1 Thessalonians 5:18  in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Choose not to complain

Do you have a tendency to complain every time something displeases or upsets you?  I know I do.  But this is something we need to work on with God.  Complaining and murmuring is a waste of time and nothing positive comes from it.  It simply opens another door for Satan.  Perhaps a lot of our problems are a result from complaining when we should have been praising or thanking God.

If you cannot change something, then change the way you think about it. -Joyce Meyer

We can complain about what we don’t have, or we can give praise for what we do have;

We can complain about our country or we can pray for our country;

We can complain about friends and family, or we can be thankful we have people in our lives;

We can complain about traffic, or we can be thankful we have a car;

We can complain about the weather or we can thank God we are healthy enough to go outside.

Joyce has even more to say, and I love it!

The next time you are tempted to complain, please remember it does no good at all.  It is a complete waste of time and says loud and clear to God you are not at all satisfied with the way He is taking care of you.  If you begin to thank God from where you are, He will help you get where you want to be.  How thankful you are in the valleys of life helps determine how fast you will make it to the mountaintops.

1 Thessalnians 5:16-18 (NKJ): 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Let us walk boldly in 2017 with a Godly mindset of positivity, peace, hope, and gratitude.

Be Blessed and Be a Blessing,

Missy
