Men and Women-Equal But Not Identical

Yesterday we began to take a closer look at marriage.  Yes, it is a subject we are almost all familiar with, but are we living it?  It is my contention that we, Christians, have no right to defend God’s definition of marriage when we ourselves are not even trying to live it out ourselves.

God’s design for marriage was for men and women (both made in the image of God) to leave their parents and be joined together in order to multiply.   Once married, men are to love their wives as Christ loves the church and be the head of their households; women are to love their husbands as the church loves Christ and submit to them.

Over the next few days we will be breaking this down and covering it all in scripture.

1.  God made men and women in His own image.

Genesis 1:27 (NKJ)-So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

What this tells me is that men and women were created equally because both were made in the image of God.  If both are created in the image of God, how can one be more superior than the other?

However, while men and women were created equally, they were not created identically.

They were not created identically for a reason.

2. Men and women were created to be fruitful and multiply.

Genesis 1:28 (NKJ): Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

The “be fruitful and multiply” wouldn’t have worked if God had made men and women equal and identical.  God’s unique design of man and woman makes it possible to carry out God’s order.  That being said, God’s design of man and woman goes way beyond their abilities to reproduce.  In many ways it is their differences that makes a marriage work as they were designed not to be identical but to complement each other.

Genesis 2:8-23 (NKJ)- The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed………..And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

How often we have read this passage, but oh how often we take it for granted.

God made every living creature, but not one was good enough for man.  And for the very first time we see that not all was good (after each day, God said it is good).  It was not good because man was alone and a helpmate could not be found amongst what God had already made.

Did you notice it said….”I will make a helper comparable to him” ?  Yes, women were made to be helpmates for their husbands.  Now I am not saying that makes us inferior to our husbands, but we were made to be helpmates, plain and simple.

I also noticed something this time that I had missed many, many times before (thanks to David Platt).  God made everything, including man, out of the dirt.  He could have done it the same way with the woman, but he doesn’t; he creates her using a part of man (the rib)!

Do not get so bent out of shape over this that you missed the significance of this scene.

“God brings man to realize that he needs someone equal to him, made with the same nature he posses but different from him , in order to help him do things he could never do on his own.” (Counter Culture p. 137)

3.  Men and women are to leave their families and be joined together.

Genesis 2:24 (NKJ): Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Yes, most people get that men and women come together sexually and become one flesh.  However, I believe God’s design goes much deeper.  When you stand before God in Holy Matrimony, you are not just coming together in the physical; two lives are now becoming one; two families are now becoming one.

Also, for all those mamma’s boys and daddy’s girls, your alliance must to be your spouse.  You are a family first and foremost and the wants, wishes, and desires of your parents, must come second to those of your spouse.

We will continue on with this discussion tomorrow.

Be blessed and be a blessing,
